It had to be done. A few weeks before Christmas I noticed an awful smell near the sink. So I kept throwing away the sponges or dish rags, thinking they were getting musty or something. Then Christmas Eve when I was doing all this cooking for dinner, I kept opening and closing the drawers and noticing that awful musty smell coming out. After we investigated we saw that the sink had apparently been leaking for quite some time, and the wood in the cabinet had rotten through, grown nasty mold/mildew and needed to be replaced. So the day after Christmas we began demolition. And finally, the end result is here! The cabinets are beautiful, all the drawers roll in and out perfectly, everything has been repainted, and we are really happy with the way it turned out.
