Franklin did an experiment (BJU Physical Science) where he had to place a candle into a shallow dish of water, light it, then put a beaker over the top. Once the candle burned up all the oxygen, it sucked in water to replace the air that was now gone. He demonstrated this experiment to his brothers, and as you can see from their expressions, especially Daniel's, it was impressive.
