We decided to roast a turkey and have a big Christmas Celebration at church with hot turkey sandwiches for Sunday. So after the turkey was done, I took all of the meat off the bones, exposing the bird's very interesting skeleton. Since Daniel just learned about bones, joints, and cartilage, I took the opportunity to have a little review. We ended up being able to identify a lot of various bone structures, as well as compare them to human anatomy. Daniel seemed most impressed with the size of the humerus. :)
There is always a teachable moment in every day life, ever notice that?
We were also able to identify the aorta running down the length of the spine, and were very excited to find the spinal cord still intact in the upper part of the skeleton. The ball and socket joints and their movements also ushered in a few 'oohs' and 'ahhs'. Anatomy was my favorite class in college, yet none of my kids seem to have shared any of the interest, until now. Maybe we'll get a doctor in the family after all!
